Welcome to Brightlands, Clearwater’s home located in Hoo, Kent.
As Clearwater’s main facility in Kent, Brightlands provides care and support for people with learning disabilities, who may also have physical disabilities. We have created a wonderful community where individuals can develop within a safe and homely environment. We are very active within the local community and take full advantage of the many amenities on our doorstep.
Our days are always busy. Programmes include activities such as cooking classes, independent living skills, employment skills, travel training and budget management. Service users also attend college - based courses. Brightlands also runs its own day service which supplements all of these activities and also offers an opportunity to meet new people. Leisure activities include visiting local places of interest, photography, health and beauty, board games and jewellery making. We have a busy events calendar which includes themed evenings which support the cultural interests of service users and staff.
We have close links with colleges in Maidstone, Gillingham and Ashford. We have input from outside agencies eg Advocacy. Referrals can be made via the service user’s GP for speech and language, psychology or other professional support which can add input to the individual’s care plan. We are supported by the local CLDT team as well as our local medical practice (located next door). Several of the services users at Brightlands are members of the local church which continually opens new doors to new faces within the wider community.
Families and friends say they are always made to feel welcome at Brightlands, and we are pleased to hear that! We have a quarterly party where everyone is invited giving us all the chance to meet together and talk. Families are invited to attend review meetings which happen every six months. We do ask families to participate in the annual quality assurance process for feedback on the home and how it is run. We always welcome feedback to find ways of improving the quality of care that we deliver. Comments slips are available in the hallway for all. Families and friends also receive a quarterly newsletter which focuses on the service and recent activities.
We also continue to grow Brightlands Day Services located at Hook Meadow Community Centre in Walderslade, Chatham. The centre provides day services for a number of Brightlands residents, along with other non-residential service users from around the area. Adults aged 16 to 65 with a mild, moderate or severe learning disability can take part in a range of activities including horseriding, hydro-therapy, swimming, IT suite and much more. The centre has supported a number of young adults who are still at college during their summer holidays, and is able to ‘scale up’ support staff to meet individual needs upon assessment. For more information and space availability, contact the Brightlands team on 01634 250 592.
